The latest Experion® PKS Orion release delivers a unique electrical automation solution that allows direct communication between Honeywell’s C300 control layer and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Combined with Experion’s powerful HMI, this solution provides sophisticated data visualization, analytics, and processing capability, allowing the electrical system to become a ‘smart grid’ to better optimize users' power usage.

Experion's integrated electrical automation solution with IEC 61850 provides the power and electrical management information directly to the operator, and the power control information directly to process controllers. It lets facilities turn the mass of data from IEDs into actionable intelligence through direct communication with the control layer. The electrical automation solution helps improve reliability and safety through better IED diagnostic and predictive data and enables faster maintenance of electrical equipment with its extensive remote operations capabilities.

With its support for IEC 61850, which is fast becoming the de facto standard for substation automation, the solution allows users to select best-in-class IEDs across manufacturers while significantly reducing engineering, installation and cost.

Using the integrated electrical automation solution in combination with IEC 61850 substations, Experion becomes a single process and electrical automation solution. By providing both a direct control level interface and a direct HMI interface, Experion can provide users the data balance they require. For smaller systems, users may choose to bring all the data through the control layer and on to HMI. For larger systems, it may make more sense not to burden the control layer with all the additional processing and route data for HMI directly from the devices.

In addition to IEC 61850, Experion offers standard integration of a range of protocols used in the power industry, including DNP3, IEC 60870 and Modbus, all in serial or TCP, plus Profibus-DP. In addition, OPC can be used to offer integration with non-IEC 61850 electrical devices.

The Experion Electrical Automation Solution delivers:

  • C300 access directly to IEDs for interlocking and control, avoiding costly hardwired or PLC connections.

  • Elimination of the need for third-party PLCs for power management applications, reducing both capital and lifecycle costs.

  • Faster maintenance of electrical equipment with remote access and control of all IED parameters. Better diagnostic and predictive data can help bring more reliability and safety.

  • More sophisticated data visualization, analytics and processing utilizing Experion HMI.
