The role of paper machine supervisory controls has moved beyond reducing product variability and mitigating process errors. Modern Quality Control Systems (QCS) must possess the ability to model, control and dynamically optimize the paper making process.

Honeywell’s Experion® MX Machine Direction (MD) and Cross Direction (CD) Controls utilize multivariable model predictive control technology to ensure product quality and paper machine runnability. These controls improve the economics of the paper making process through better utilization of resources and increased production efficiency.
Multivariable MD control uses Honeywell’s new Alpha MPC controller to minimize the future predicted variation of all controlled variables in the paper making process while honoring both quality constraints as well as physical constraints on manipulated variables. An economic optimization layer offers dynamic control for processes with sufficient degrees of freedom.

In addition, automatic grade change control can be executed with supervisory MD controls in open or closed loop for speedy, reliable grade changes.

Multivariable CD controls coordinate the corrective actions of multiple CD actuators and extends their effective control range to provide the best overall sheet quality.

The IntelliMap process identification and tuning tool efficiently commissions CD controls, while Adaptive Alignment continuously monitors control performance to automatically detect and correct alignment changes.

Honeywell’s Experion MX MD and CD Controls optimize control of the paper making process to provide continuous product quality and fast recovery from process upsets.  Energy savings and production increases may also be realized through the elimination of control range limitations.
