HOUSTON, April 20, 2017 ̶ Honeywell (NYSE: HON) Process Solutions (HPS) today announced its award-winning Crepe Structure Measurement sensor has met with overwhelming global acceptance from pulp and paper industry customers.
Honeywell ZipLineTM is part of Honeywell’s Quality Control Systems for continuous web industries.
The new technology, which is unique to Honeywell’s Experion® MX integrated quality control and process knowledge system, provides users with a tool to optimize creping in real-time for improved production quality and efficiency. This substantial change in paper tissue and towel production has gained rapid acceptance in the industry, and HPS has seen significant orders from paper manufacturers around the world. Some customers have even replaced their entire quality control system to reap the benefits of this new measurement tool.
Introduced less than two years ago, HPS’ technology has earned recognition within the pulp and paper industry, receiving two awards recently. In November 2016, the sensor won the bronze award for innovation at the annual conference of the French paper industry association (Association Technique de L'Industrie Papetière) in Grenoble, France. Previously, Markku Kellomäki, HPS senior scientist, was awarded the Jasper Mardon Memorial Prize by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry at its 2015 PaperCon conference in Atlanta. The international organization presents this award for a specific technical achievement that makes a significant contribution to advancing the science and technology of papermaking.
“While it has been great to see the power of this innovation recognized with awards by leading paper industry associations, the best evidence of the sensor’s value is the demand we have seen and continue to see from producers,” said Marko Jämsén, leader of HPS’ pulp and paper business in Europe.
The Crepe Structure Measurement sensor analyzes tissue quality by capturing high-resolution images of the moving sheet to identify important variables in the creping process. Real-time images offer unprecedented visibility of machine and cross direction values, bringing a wide-range of potential benefits:
Longer blade life for fewer blade changes and increased uniformity
Quicker recovery to crepe targets after doctor blade change, sheet breaks, grade changes or other upsets
Optimization of complex crepe processes for better runnability
Enhanced paper machine performance for improved converting and total efficiency
Quicker trial runs and trouble-shooting processes
Continuous monitoring of production and equipment conditions with snapshot images from configurable locations across the sheet
Reduction of raw material, energy and maintenance costs
Crepe Structure Measurement is available to all users of Honeywell’s Experion MX solution to achieve stable production, compliance with quality specifications and elimination of waste in the pulp and paper industry. Used by manufacturers worldwide, Experion MX provides superior visibility into the papermaking process while simplifying operational efforts as well as reducing maintenance and service costs.
